If you are in the market for replacement windows, you will be overwhelmed when you begin to research this topic. With over 100 different brands of windows and all the options of frame materials and glass types, it is easy to get confused. But by doing your homework you will eventually get the window replacement quote that will suit your needs and your budget.
There are two components to a replacement window quote: materials and labor. If you plan to install your replacement windows yourself, you need only worry about buying the right materials and tools. However, if you plan to have a contactor do the installation, you have more homework to do.
The five main material performance characteristics are: energy efficiency, aesthetics, ease of operation, maintenance, and noise/dust reduction. The aesthetics are a personal choice and deal mainly with the style of the window frame. You can determine energy efficiency by the window ratings. Maintenance depends primarily on the frame material, and the other two criteria are determined by how the window is manufactured.
If you are going to have your windows installed, the safest bet is to select a manufacturer whose product meets your standards, and who also provides factory-authorized installation. It may cost a little more, but any problems should be resolved more effectively and warranties are more likely to be honored. But always make sure the contractor you choose is licensed and insured, and always get referrals and references.
Always get at least three replacement window quotes on both the labor and materials, but don't necessarily select the lowest bidder. You get what you pay for, and you want the job done right the first time.
