Spring and summer are notorious for invasions of insect pests, but the insidious habits of termites can lead to major damage before you're aware of their presence. Unlike many insects, a termite colony can live for many years, with the king and queen termites often surviving for decades. Their longevity increases a termite colony's ability to large amounts of destruction over time.
Your Termite Neighbors: How and Where they Live
Termites congregate in colonies established by a king and queen once they find a suitable nesting site. They seal themselves in a chamber and produce thousands of fertile eggs, which hatch into nymphs. The nymphs mature into soldiers and workers who voraciously feed on wood and also provide food for the king and queen.
Of the four major termite types, only mound building termites are not found in the US. Damp wood, dry wood and subterranean termites are prevalent in areas according to the availability of their preferred food. Damp wood termites tend to be found in moist forest locales, and may also be present in wood structures where water accumulates. Dry wood termites can live in hot and dry environments, including deserts. This promotes their survival in a variety of habitats, including your home, furniture and book collection. Subterranean termites nest underground, and later migrate to wood sources above ground.
