In ancient Rome grand, spacious and elaborate public baths were very popular. These facilities were used by many people on a daily basis. Today’s homeowners are often seeking the same feeling of “grandness” in their private bathrooms. In fact, the number one concern I hear from clients is the bathroom is too small. Well they don’t have to be anymore.

The design possibilities of today’s bathrooms are unlimited. The old rules don’t apply; even large windows with views are becoming more common.. Function, performance, openness and easy to care for materials often top the bathroom wish list. When designing a bath, layout of components, placement of cabinets, and selection of finishes are all factors that should be taken into consideration. The following are are just a few ideas to consider:

BASICS: There are many choices of wall, floor and countertop finishes on the market. Fritztile is a polyester resin which can be laid like tile, but it is seamless with no grout lines. Solid surfacing is also popular. There are several brands on the market that are most recognizable by consumers. Among them is Corian, Avonite, Nevamar, and Wilsonart. OTHER: A variety of other products are available including saunas and steam rooms. One more exotic product is an environmental enclosure where you can program a synthesized gentle rain, warming sun, warm breeze, etc.

LIGHTING: Lighting is important when planning your bath areas. Most bathrooms have inadequate lighting, especially if there are no windows. Halogen and fiber optic lighting can be a good solution. Adding a dimmer can control the degree and softness of light.

ACCESSORIES: Bathroom art is often overlooked because most of us are not sure of what is appropriate. Bathroom art is simply any architectural detail or design (such as the art form Frieze), that adds an added feature to the decor of the bathroom. Fabrics can be used as draping, wall hangings, or upholstered into the vanity seats. Jewelry is seen in some baths as form of decoration by the draping effect that is used over ornate cups.

PROFESSIONAL HELP. If you are remodeling your bathroom, consider retaining a space planner, bath designer, and contractor to assist you. even if you will be doing the work yourself. Even if it is on a consultation basis, if you do not have a background in this area, it’s wise to seek out the input, advice and direction of a professional. This could save you lots of money in the long run. None of us wants to insecure in a job that we have just completed or wake up with four feet of water in the house. This is especially true if you own an older home, where plumbing and electrical wiring might need replacing.

If you are building a home, pay careful attention to the planning of your bathrooms. Granted not every bathroom in the house can be grand and spacious. Just make sure, if the standard bathroom designs don’t meet your needs and you have the leeway in your layout and budget, try to make at least one bathroom special. Stay in close communication with your builder or architect. In all respects, your bath is yours. And in most cases, you will have to live with it for a long time.
