Composite decks have become very popular in recent years as an alternative to the traditional wood decking. One of the most positive things about composite decking is that it's much more environmentally friendly than wood decking. Unfortunately, the world we live in has become a place of unlimited demand with only limited supply. In the case of wood, we're using it up quicker than we can grow new trees.

Composite decks will not take from our already depleted supply of wood. However, in spite of their eco-friendly nature, there are different advantages and disadvantages to using composite decks. Pros of Composite Decks

• The only maintenance they require is spraying and sweeping.
• They won't crack, split or warp.
• There is little waste in the building process because every piece is quality controlled.
• Many recycled materials go in the composite decking, making it more eco-friendly.
• It won't fade like wood decking.
• The colors can be easily matched with your home.

Cons of Composite Decks

• The major con of using composite decking is that it's considerably higher (2-5 times) than traditional wood decking like the pressure treated lumber that's used in most wood decks.
• Composite decks often need smaller spaces between the joists because the material can't span as far as wood.
• The flexibility of some of the material in composite decking can be increased by extreme temperature changes.
• It's a lot heavier than wood.
• Installation of composite decking requires the use of special fasteners.

Some people just prefer the look of wood, which you're losing with composite decks.
