One major contributor to high energy bills within a home is air lost through exterior doors. Many homeowners are unaware at how much a simple gap in an exterior door can impact their annual energy bills. With some simple changes or repairs, these exterior door issues can be addressed. Here are several tips to increase energy efficiency within your home:
- Install doors with the Energy Star label.
- Repair damage: Repairing broken glass on doors, re-sealing the doors frame and addressing door gaps will each enhance energy efficiency within your home.
- Check the edges: Weather stripping should receive regular maintenance. This means keeping it clean and in proper working order. Check the stripping around the edges of the door, the doorframe and any windowpanes.
When you complete regular exterior door maintenance, you will see energy savings on an annual basis. If you cannot repair the exterior door, consider replacing it to achieve the same energy savings effect.
