Concrete driveway designs can range from “plain vanilla” gray concrete with a simple broom-swept surface to impressive faux-patterned and colored designs. Pouring a concrete driveway is boring and backbreaking, so if you’re already going through that process, you may as well make it fun. Sit down and do some brainstorming with your contractor; you may be shocked at what is possible these days.

Stamped Concrete Designs

Concrete driveways can be stamped using commercially available or custom-made stamps which can produce any faux surface you would like. Bricks, tiles, cobblestones and wooden planks are possible, as well as marble, slate and deckplate. Because of the superb malleability of concrete, the surface possibilities are limited only by your imagination.

Concrete Colors and Finishes

Colors can be added to concrete during the mixing process or “dusted on” at the project site. A combination of carefully chosen color and finish can accomplish a fair imitation of everything from river rocks to leather. Homeowners normally choose colors that compliment their home or landscaping tones, but some adventurous souls create driveways which are actually focal points of the property.

Integrating Your Driveway Design

If you are in a position to do so, integrating your driveway with other concrete surfaces around your home can be fun. Small “paving stones” in a sidewalk can be used to accent larger “slabs” in the driveway. A faux slate border on the driveway could continue around back onto a “tiled” patio.

Concrete driveway design can be as plain or outrageous as the homeowner wishes. If you are worried about scaring the neighbors, a nice, brick pattern will add personality to your home, but if you want to give the paparazzi something to gawk at, studded leather driveways are not unheard of.
