Once considered to be an eccentric luxury for a few homeowners, a home surround sound system is now commonplace in many homes. This is because the entry-level costs of this specialized stereo equipment have come down dramatically from what they once were, while their availability has sky rocketed. Home surround sound systems and other home theater systems can now be purchased online, at specialized electronics stores, and even at generic box-stores like WalMart and Costco.
A basic home surround sound system usually consists of a TV, a surround sound receiver, and at least five speakers optimally placed around the TV to create the "3-D" audio effects of surround sound. That system can be expanded to include sub-woofers, pre-amplifiers, DVD or blue-ray disk players, satellite radio and TV receivers, as well as plug-in jacks for home computers and iPod docking stations. Before purchasing any home theater equipment, it is important to have a basic understanding of what you want from the system and what your house is equipped to handle. Although a home surround sound system can be purchased that is out-of-the-box ready to install, many of the more advanced home theater systems require running speaker wires behind finished walls and in the ceiling, as well as needing access to cable TV and Internet jacks, antennae, and of course, an adequate power supply.
