Brick has been used on fireplaces for just about as long as fireplaces have been around. If you think of any colonial homes you may have been in or seen pictures of, chances are pretty good that it had a brick fireplace in the main room or kitchen. Brick fireplaces are still a good choice for giving your home that old fashioned look, but with the many styles and colors of brick now available you can complement any style of decorating with your brick fireplace.
Brick can be used for the surround of your fireplaces, and they can also be used to build a hearth. You can even create a focal point in your room with a massive, raised-hearth brick fireplace. You may want to build a woodbox next to your fireplace using brick. If you are concerned about the weight of brick but still want the look, consider using thin brick or installing faux brick around your fireplace.
Thin brick fireplaces use brick that is only about three-quarters of an inch deep as opposed to the three-and-one-half inches of traditional brick. Faux brick fireplaces use a material about the same depth as thin brick, but with a fraction of the weight. Faux brick fireplaces and thin brick fireplaces have almost as many color options as traditional brick fireplaces.
