Tile is one of the most attractive surrounds you can install on your fireplace, and it is also one of the easiest for a homeowner to apply. The many varieties of ceramic tile from which to choose are another reason why tile fireplaces are so popular. You can use ceramic tile ranging in size from four inches or smaller, all the way up to twelve inches and larger; and you can use one solid color, alternate several colors, or choose tile with a pattern throughout.
Homeowners seeking a modern look often choose to install one or two rows of larger ceramic tile around the firebox and may use the same tile to create a floor hearth. If your decor is more old fashioned or colonial, you may prefer using smaller ceramic tiles to build your surround. Hand painted tile is popular for this look; you can purchase reclaimed antique tile or tile that just looks antique. You can top off an old fashioned fireplace with a wood surround and mantle overlapping your ceramic tile.
Tile fireplaces can be especially attractive when the fireplace is raised about two feet off the floor and ceramic tile is installed on the wall between the fireplace and the hearth; a raised fireplace looks great from a couch or a recliner.
