Slate Flooring
Slate flooring is a popular trend in home remodeling because of the unsurpassed beauty it brings to a room. Due to its durability, slate flooring is a great choice for entryways, bathrooms, and kitchens - areas that receive the most wear in a home. Bathrooms are one of the most popular areas to install slate flooring because water does not affect the slate.
There are some factors to consider before buying slate flooring.
Cost
Like all natural stone products, slate flooring doesn't come cheap. It's also expensive to ship. Stones can cost anywhere from $12 to $25 a square foot, with installation prices running between $5 and $7 a square foot. Costs, however, can be offset by the added value slate floors bring to a home.
Weight
Slate is a stone product, so naturally it's quite heavy. The sub-floor it's being laid upon must be in good condition to support the additional weight of the slates. Although the slates are machined flat on the bottom side to make a level floor, the slates still can crack if the subfloor flexes. Concrete backing board can be used to provide added stability.
Although slate flooring can be installed by a clever do-it-yourselfer, it's usually safest to hire a professional to install the flooring.
