Planning A Home Office

With today's easy access to computers, fax machines, and modems, many of us are bringing our work home. We need a little office space, whether it's for company tasks or simply paying the bills and doing taxes. For some, the home office is right at the kitchen table, and others actually have the luxury of a separate area designated as "the office." The kitchen table is fine from time to time. However, when dinner time rolls around and you have important papers spread from one end to the other, you have to sort and stack in a hurry! There are ways to find an office in the home, no matter how close the quarters seem. Designating your home is really a simple matter of space planning.

Adequate space is your first priority. (One reason why we love to spread everything out on the kitchen table!) Would you believe that an armoire can be converted to a computer center? You can adjust the shelving to accommodate the computer and printer. Placed in the dining room, your office can even spread out onto the table! Another amazingly spacious option is a large wall closet. Add a desk, file drawers, shelves, and behold, the perfect paperwork nook! Not only do you reap the benefits of an office, but closing the doors conceals it completely!

Comb the home for unused space. Could that area under the stairway become a custom built workspace? As you are planning your home office, don't forget the importance of lighting. For better illumination, install track lighting over your workspace. And of course, a desk lamp is a must. Proper lighting is more than just a source by which to see, but it also affects our frame of mind. Good illumination encourages productivity and concentration.

If you saw no room in your home for an office, look again. With a little creative space planning, you may come up with a workspace solution besides the kitchen table.
