Wood fencing is an environmentally sound and affordable choice for your yard enclosure. Better yet, wood fences are beautiful and numerous options are available. Pick a classic wood fencing style, such as a white picket fence or a crisscross-rail pattern popular on horse farms. Match your modern home with a slat fence that mimics venetian blinds, or select a lattice pattern, creating a backdrop for your garden. Painting your enclosure means you are limited only by your imagination, whether that means popping purple or desert tan.
If you have carpentry experience or a knack for working with your hands, you can build your own wood fence. Or, call on a fencing contractor to complete the entire project, or have an expert install posts and offer advice. Step in to build simpler wood fence sections. Prefabricated wood fencing sections are available at home stores and lumberyards, as well.
When shopping for wood, avoid untreated pine, choosing redwood, cedar, or pressure-treated pine instead. Whether or not you paint your fence, be sure to brush on a wood preservative or semitransparent stain, protecting it from cracks and splits. Wood fencing upkeep calls for reapplying a waterproof sealer every few years, based on your geographic locale.
