Heating Options for the 21st Century

Home Heating systems have come a long way since campfires in a cave. We now have thermostatically-controlled, heating systems with load-leveling options and air filtration systems. Do you ever wonder, though, if there are heating options beyond the builder’s preferred HVAC systems and your local utilities? Well, there are many of those options, and here are a few to consider.

Solar-Powered Electric Heating

First and foremost: there is nothing wrong with electric heating. Modern electric furnaces and heaters are efficient and environmentally friendly. However, there are ways to use them without being dependant on your local utilities. Many electrical heating systems can work with either regular electric or solar power, and can switch between the two if necessary.

Wood-Burning Heating Systems

Don’t panic; we are still light-years removed from campfires. Today’s wood or wood-pellet burning stoves can produce an enormous amount of heat from very little fuel. Buying and storing the fuel requires some planning, but it is worth your time. Your house will stay cozy, and you are using the original renewable fuel.

Corn Stoves

Corn stoves are basically wood burning stoves which burn corn kernels. The advantages are the same, but the smoke smells a bit different.

Waste Oil Heating Systems

These systems take recycling to new frontiers. Waste oil boilers will burn used gear oil, hydraulic fluid, fuel oil, and crankcase oil to produce plenty of heat with very few emissions. Waste oil boilers can be used with forced air or radiant heat systems, and are EPA approved for recycling oil.

If you are satisfied with your home’s current heating system, great. If, however, it’s time to upgrade, or you would prefer another fuel source, it may be time to join the evolution!
