Your home’s HVAC system is the combination of your heating, ventilation and air conditioning appliances; everything from space heaters to cooling towers. Today’s HVAC equipment is greener and more economical than ever, so if you own a new system, you probably have an affordable, efficient, and responsible way to stay comfortable. Whether your HVAC system is brand new, or your heat pump remembers the moon landing, there are some ways you can maintain the affordable and efficient HVAC system.
Fuel, refrigerant or exhaust leaks can be expensive at best, and downright dangerous the rest of the time. Natural gas is explosive, carbon monoxide from a heater can be deadly, and while R-410A is less damaging to the environment than the older types of refrigerant, it isn’t good for it, either. If anything is venting inside or outside your house that shouldn’t be, fix it quickly.
Your HVAC system should be on a maintenance schedule just like your car. Hoses should be checked, filters cleaned or changed, fluid levels topped off, and moving parts lubricated. If your system is working efficiently, it will conserve both natural and financial resources.
Have a professional check your system out as close as possible to seasonal shifts. Your air conditioner should be inspected in early to mid spring, and your heater in the early fall. Repairs are less frustrating and sometimes cheaper when done off-season.
Properly maintaining your HVAC system can keep you comfortable, healthy and financially solvent. It can also mitigate or reverse environmental damage by conserving resources and decreasing pollution. So what are you waiting for? Check those filters and plug those leaks! Your grandchildren will thank you.
