Cabinet Refacing Tips

Cabinet refacing is a process of giving a cabinet a new face or a new skin. There are several methods to doing this. You can do this using white thermofoil. Another application is the use of colored or patterned (or even natural looking) laminate products. You can even use wood veneers that are quite thin to update the look. For some projects, it is nothing more than removing paint and redoing it.

Most cabinet refacing projects involve the use of skins. These skins are cut down to the size of the cabinet then glued on the doors and all other cabinet surfaces. Drawer fronts, panels and all other areas of the kitchen cabinets are covered with this product. Some manufacturers are now making self stick products that make the project simplistic. This is a job that the do it yourselfer can tackle as long as they have the time and the patience to get it just right.

When it comes to doing this type of project, there are a few things to remember:

1. Always take exact measurements, and do it two times. Once you make a mistake, you cannot fix it without using a whole new skin or prying the material off.

2. Do take the time to clean the cabinets first. This surface should be as clean as possible so that the skins will adhere properly to the cabinets.

3. You will need to follow the manufacturer's directions for applying, cutting and caring for the skins.

Cabinet refacing using these skins is a good idea for those who have cabinetry that is in relative solid condition. Any repairs need to be handled before you begin the application process.
