Lawn Aerating
Once a year, a well-used lawn needs extra care in the form of lawn aeration. Rainfall, clippings, fallen leaves, foot traffic, and dog action all work to compress your green grass. If your lawn becomes too compacted, its roots are tangled, which stunts their growth. Aerating your yard allows oxygen and water to permeate your grass, making for a healthier, lush landscape.
During lawn aerating, an aerator machine digs holes in the earth. A spike/blade aerator presses the soil down around a spike, helping rid your lawn of soil matter called lawn thatch. For maximum air circulation and water absorption, though, most lawn care experts recommend using hollow-tine aerators. This style of aerator removes hundreds of tiny lawn plugs, roughly 3 inches long and a little less than an inch wide, and leaves them behind.
Lawn aerating can be a do-it-yourself task, or you can hire a lawn care service. Rent an aerator from a local home improvement store or tool rental center. Operating a hollow-tine aerator is hard work; after a day behind this heavy machine, you will be tired and sore. Although the cost of hiring a landscaping company for lawn aerating depends on your geographic locale, expect to pay three times the price of a regular lawn mowing session.
