This landscape design takes advantage of complementary shapes and colors that lend a cozy, earthy feel of lawn and garden to this formal entryway. There's nothing ordinary about the landscaping treatment of the finely manicured lawn, rounded shrubs, and outdoor planting that mellows the formal entrance to this elegant home. The dappled light in this photo shows the knowledgeable design that breaks up the formal regularity of rising pillars and bay windows with rounded shapes and colors. The garden path wraps across the edge of the green lawn, rather than cut directly through it. The net impact is that the straight lines of the home do not stretch across the garden to the street. Instead, the use of the lawn and outdoor plantings to create a setback for the home works like a charm--and adds charm, too. As with the backyard treatment, the addition of a corkscrew bush at the entryway echoes the formal lines that reach skyward from the home. The mixture of broad shrubs and tight bushes of complementary hues adds interest to the design and, when grown, will provide relief to the straight lines beyond. The tasteful use of tiles in the walk and the spot use of square planters add interest while grounding the overall design. The house and lawn look formal and cozy at the same time!
