Wooden Shingle Roofs for Historic Buildings

Most of the time you see wooden shingle roofs on historic buildings. These shingles fit in with the period in which the home was built and thus help it maintain the authentic look. In historical times it was more common for homes to be built of wood and thus the roofs were also of wood. We have evolved from that time for many reasons, and though there are still some homes that are made of wood, it is usually the modern log cabins and very old homes that are still in good condition. Installing wooden roofs on these older homes helps preserve the authenticity of the period to which they relate.

When historians make the decision to restore old homes it makes it seem more believable to use materials that were used during that period. If wood was used for roofing during a particular period you want to retain that part of history. The same holds true if you buy a home that was built during a certain period in history. You don't want to modernize a historical home but restore it to its original condition. If that means using wooden shingles then you want to make the investment into doing that.

You do want to remember that wooden shingles require regular maintenance. Though they can last anywhere from fifteen years to fifty years, you need to make sure you replace any damaged shingles before other parts of the wood begin to deteriorate. The more you help maintain the home, the longer your shingles will last and help maintain the historical look of your home and the surrounding areas.
