Wood siding has been a popular option for homeowners for many decades. When properly installed and maintained, wood siding is a beautiful and durable investment.
The type of wood you use for your home's exterior depends on many factors. Regional woods are often easier to obtain and might cost less than woods that must be shipped a great distance. Rare woods, or those that are not frequently harvested, can fetch premium prices. Before you purchase wood siding, be sure to ask questions about rot resistance, insect resistance, splitting, warping, and cupping, as some woods are likely more durable than others in your particular climate. Pine, fur, and spruce are softwoods that require a bit more maintenance, but make for an economical siding option. Redwood offers excellent insect and rot resistance, but is plentiful only in the western United States. Cedar is one of the most durable woods, and has a reputation for beauty - however, it is also one of the more expensive options.
No matter your choice in wood siding, proper maintenance is essential. Though some companies offer siding that has been primed and sealed in the factory, no wood siding is truly maintenance-free. Regular cleaning, power washing, staining, and sealing are required to keep your investment looking good.
