Framing A Wall Part 2 - Build the Wall

This video will show you how to frame the wall using a framing square and how to build the header with the help of some shims.

We're going to frame the wall, build it down on the concrete and raise it up. We want to square this wall before we nail it together so we have our carpenter square here and a framing square. Make sure that this lines up. We're flush there. Set a nail there. Adjust that a little and double-check that you're square. Line up this X with your 2x4. Go to the next. I like to do one side at the time. That's how we get it started. Line up the 2x4s on the X, two nails in each one.

We have our safety goggles on because we're going to do some cutting. I've got 83 inches. I take a 1 ½ inch off for the bottom plate and take your square and mark that off. You're going to need two of these, one for each side. We're framing in for the header, for the door. We got a 6ft door. That means we need 74 inches, 83 inches high for this door, anyway. I got these parts that are going to hold the header up. This cement is not all that even and you may not have that problem in a regular house. You're going to put the nails down here and then I'll show how to make the header.

We're going to make a header since we have a 6ft door here with a 77 inch opening. So I've cut some 2x6s here. You need a ½ inch shim made out of plywood. Space those evenly. We've got five of those for this length. Use the wood up. Make sure its flush. Now we're going to spike it together through the shims there. Get the shims lined up. Step on it. Each shim gets two nails. I have this side nailed through the ½ inch plywood. Do the same to the other side. The reason you put the shims in is to make the same thickness as the wall. We've got our header built. This is where our header goes. Push this down, and get it flush so run some nails. Four nails there to get that started. We need one on each end to continue this support. The rest of them will go off your 16 inch centers. Then, just square that up.
