Stocking Your Toolbox Part 2: Screwdrivers, Pry Bars and Chisels

Today we’re talking about screwdrivers and we’ve got here an assortment of what we call Phillips screwdrivers. These are a little different from the slot head. They come, looks like a plus sign if you look at the thing, end on end. It’s got four little blades and it fits the Phillips screw. Now these are very good for a lot of different things. You’ll find that a lot of electronics use Phillips screwdrivers. These come in various sizes and again like the slot blade screwdriver, it’s very important to get the right size for the screw that you’re using otherwise you’re going to chew it up. So we’ve got them all the way from the little guy here to this pretty big hefty Phillips screwdriver. Quite a lot Phillips screws used in automotive applications again in electronics, appliances. You got to take off the handle on your washer machine or dishwasher, you’re gonna need one of these babies. Make sure you have the right size so you need to have a good assortment of Phillips screwdrivers in your toolbox.

Now we’re gonna to talk about pry bars today. This is an example of what we’re talking about, the pry bar. You can see it’s got two different ends, a couple of different angles. This is good for a lot of stuff. You can remove nails from a wall or if you got something a little higher up you can pry that off with the center piece. It’s also real good for driving in and separating things. For instance, the baseboards on your walls. You need to get those baseboards off. You just slip this down, a couple of reps with a hammer, and comes right on out. So the pry bar can be used for all kinds of different stuff, very useful tool. You need to have one of these hanging on the wall over your tool bench.

If you’re doing any kind of wood working, this is the tool that you’re going to need to have in your tool box. The wood chisel is used for a variety of different things in wood working. Just for one example if you’re putting in a new door, you got a new door frame and door casing where the hinges have to be set into that door frame. This is the tool that you’re gonna use. You get in there and put your template in. Use this wood chisel to make that opening for the hinge so that it sits flesh and it doesn’t get in the way when you’re trying to close your door. These come in a variety of sizes and we only got a couple here. This is a ¾ and this is a ½ inch. They go all the way down to very, very small or pretty large sizes depending on the kind of job you want to do. So if you’re going to be doing any working with wood, a wood chisel is definitely something you’re going to want on have on hand.
