When it comes to new technology in home windows, great strides are being made. Interested in windows that clean themselves? Or how about controlling the amount of light that enters your windows by using a dimmer switch? There are dozens of new technologies on the market today to make home windows more convenient, energy efficient, and stylish.
Low-E Glass
Old, drafty windows and doors can suck more than air out of your home--they can also take money out of your wallet, with an estimated 25 percent of an average household's energy bills eaten up by inefficient doors and windows. Low-emission (Low-E) glass helps keep heat in the house during the winter and out of the house in the summer. Its thin metallic coating reflects heat and reduces energy costs, as well as blocking out harmful UV rays.
Professional Window Coatings
As an alternative to Low-E glass, homeowners can opt for professionally applied window coatings. The benefits are similar to those of Low-E glass; the coatings help reduce heat and glare, and offer similar energy savings. The big appeal for homeowners is the UV protection that window coatings offer. Professional window coatings are like built-in sunscreen, protecting carpets and furniture from the color-draining and damage that UV rays can cause over time.
Double Paned Windows
In addition to energy savings, double-paned windows can also help with noise reduction. Thicker glass and more room between the panes (usually 1/4 to 1 inch) will further help reduce outside noise.
Dual Action Coating
For homeowners that hate the chore of window washing, scientists have developed dual action coating, which helps windows actually clean themselves by breaking down organic matter as it collects on glass.
Suspended Particle Device (SPD) Technology
Also known as "smart glass," SPD technology allows you to control the tint of glass panes using a dimmer switch. SPD windows can be transparant or fully opaque, reducing glare, UV rays, and heat, all with the turn of a switch. The convenience and energy efficiency of this type of glass may make it the window to the future.
Special Glass Treatments
If you're looking for something a little different than run-of-the-mill window treatments, consider special glass treatments like frosted or bubbled glass. Most special glass treatments allow light to come through just as well as a normal window, but offer privacy, making them a popular choice for rooms like the bathroom.
Whatever your window wants or needs, there's sure to be a specialty window treatment to meet your every demand.
